Energy Efficiency
Where possible, our light bulbs in holiday homes and outside lights are all low energy bulbs, and we use timers or light sensors on all outside lights, to make sure they are off when not required. We do not leave TV’s on Standby when holiday homes are empty and turn off anything when not in use. In the facilites block, we use thermostatically controlled heating and Dyson Airblade hand dryers which use 80% less energy. Our boilers are regularly serviced and our freezers regularly defrosted, to increase efficiency. For the electricity that we do use we only purchase ‘Green Tariff Electricity’ generated from renewable energy sources.
Solar Heating of our Swimming Pool Water
Thanks to the Dartmoor Sustainable Development Fund andRenewable Energy 4 Devon (who have helped fund this project), our swimming pool water is heated using solar energy.
Water Conservation
To conserve water we have fitted dual flush or flow reduction mechanisms in all holiday homes and sensors in the gents urinals. All our taps and plumbing is regularly maintained to avoid leaks and dripping taps and we display signs reminding guests to turn taps off when not in use. Where possible we use rainwater to water our plants and at all times employ sensible practises to conserve water usage. This has been recognised by South West Water who have graded our water efficiency levels as 'Comprehensive' in their Water Efficiency Scheme.
Waste
We recycle glass, paper, cardboard and plastic. We donate old bedding to the local animal rescue and reuse garden waste by chipping it for mulch. With an increase in email correspondence, we're reducing paper usage and road mileage.
Newspapers
We have calculated that 2-3.5 metric tonnes of CO2 would be produced if we collected papers each day as we are unable to get delivery here. This is made up of the actual production of papers and the 2000 miles of travel for us to collect them each season. This is why we offer free wifi access to the papers online.
Keeping it Local
We try to buy locally where possible, and stock a wide range of local produce in the shop, from local fresh free range eggs to Devon made jams, pickles, chutneys and vinegars from Hogs Bottom Garden Delights.
Landscape and Environment
Woodovis is a pretty special place which attracts a huge variety of wildlife and we do everything we can to keep it that way. We have planted hundreds of native plants and we're rejuvinating the beech trees along the drive by cutting out the extra growth, allowing new specimen trees to take the place of the big old ones once they go. The old trees were probably planted in 1855! We provide a dog walking area and dog bins to help our dog owners leave no traces behind and we're fortunate that our guests take as much care as we do to keep the park beautiful and litter free.
