If you fancy a bit of ‘shopping till dropping‘ Plymouth has all the regular shops in Drake´s Circus the indoor mall.
Dartmoor Cycles are based right next to the start of Drake’s Trail. They will advise you on the route and will also introduce you to the latest downhill cycling.
Devon Cycle Hire will deliver bikes to your pitch at Woodovis Park. They are right next to the lovely Granite Way for the more gentle approach! Quality bikes, traffic free cycling over two viaducts along the Granite Way. Direct trail access, Devon pubs on the route and spectacular views of Dartmoor. Booking advisable.
These routes offer walkers and cyclists some of the most varied and rewarding routes in the South West, as well supporting the villages of the Valley along the way. Cycle routes suitable for more experienced riders.
By train and by foot is a great way to explore our lovely Tamar Valley (and beyond). Not only an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but also a World Heritage Site!
An great way to visit Plymouth or to explore the valley. Free parking just 10 minutes away in Gunnislake and you purchase your ticket on the train.
Steam Locomotives run from Launceston through several miles of countryside to the hamlet of Newmills. At Launceston there is a café, museum, workshop, well stocked shop and bookshop, and adjacent to the railway at Newmills is a popular farm park.
There’s much more to travelling than getting from A to B. Journeys in South West England can be a highlight of your stay, providing unique views, the chance to unwind or to step back in time. Here are just a few of our favourites for you to try.
This is a fortified medieval house and richly planted garden with a quay, mill and variety of woodland walks, a mile or so riverside walk from Calstock.
This is 8 acres of glorious gardens, including a two-acre walled garden, with some wonderful panoramic views over stunning South Devon landscape. Teas and light lunches are served in the house.
This is a 13th century abbey, later converted into the home of Sir Francis Drake. Explore the legendary life of Sir Francis Drake and the Armada.
The castle and grounds are lovely to visit, and during the school holidays there are all sorts of fun and adventurous activities going on for the little’uns.
Beautifully sited on the fringe of Dartmoor, Lydford boasts three defensive features. Near the centre is a 13th-century tower on a mound, built as a prison. To the south is an earlier Norman earthwork castle: to the north, Saxon town defences.
This is an early 19th century forge, powered by three water wheels, which produced sickles, scythes and shovels for both agriculture and mining.
Plymouth Gin!! Ooooh! Yum, yum! Plymouth Gin is the only English gin still made at its original distillery. The Black Friars Distillery in Plymouth, the oldest working English distillery – since 1793.
This is an exquisitely furnished and decorated 18th century mansion set in a period garden and 500 acre landscaped park.
Set on a large natural mound, Launceston Castle dominates the surrounding landscape. Begun soon after the Norman Conquest, its focus is an unusual 13th century round tower keep built by Richard, Earl of Cornwall, inside an earlier circular shell-keep.
The grandest and most welcoming house in Cornwall, set in 450 acres of woods and parkland running down to the Fowey river and encircled by formal and woodland gardens, lovely in all seasons.
Its wonderful location, set high on the rugged North Cornwall coast, offers dramatic views. Tintagel Castle is steeped in legend and mystery; said to be the birthplace of King Arthur, you can still visit the nearby Merlin’s Cave.
14th century ruins, once the largest castle in Devon. Although ruined, the gravity defying keep still stands tall in its tranquil setting of woodland and with a river running past.
It stands in a superb waterside location, guarding the entrance to the Dart estuary. Magnificent battlement views and a fascinating history make the castle the perfect venue for a great day out.
Over 900 years old. On a hilltop with super views over the river Dart. Worth a visit when visiting the lovely town of Totnes.
Dartmoor’s latest attraction! Over 100 vintage and classic vehicles from Victorian horse-drawn carts to cars, motorcycles from pre-1920s to the 1990s.
Whatever the season, the garden is a unique and enchanting place that people return to time and time again to find ideas and inspiration.
These gardens have been in existence for more than 400 years. This makes a really full day out. Enjoy The Jungle, the productive gardens, the Lost Valley, Farm Walk and the pleasure grounds.
The famous biomes, tropical and Mediterranean gardens built in an old used up quarry. Plans for a new building to house a desert landscape in a ‘bowed tennis racket shape’!
Internationally known gardens with over 700 different varieties of rhododendrons, camellias, blue hydrangeas and specimen conifers. 50 acres in all.
This tranquil garden and estate is renowned for its glorious position at the head of Carrick Roads, with panoramic views down the estuary towards Falmouth and the sea.
Set in a wooded valley dropping steeply to the hamlet of Durgan on the shore of the beautiful Helford estuary, Glendurgan is one of the great sub-tropical gardens of the South West.
Situated in the centre of Tavistock, this market is open from Tuesdays through to Saturdays with different sales each day. Tuesday is antiques, collectables and bric-a-brac. Wednesdays and Thursdays is a mixed market with a varied range of goods and crafted wares. Fridays is the charter market and Saturdays consists of the Aladdin’s cave every 1st Saturday of the month, crafts market every 2nd Saturday of the month, a mixed market every 3rd Saturday of the month and a Victorian market on the 4th.
Farmers markets are an ever increasingly popular way to purchase some of the best food and drink in the country. You can get to meet the folk who produce these wonderful things, sample their wares, and get ideas on how to cook and present your food. A wide and spacious sand/shingle beach with many rock pools at low tide. East beach has a reputation as an unofficial nudist beach.
A sheltered sandy cove with rock pools to explore, this beach is located close to Plymouth and backed by low cliffs.
Two sand and shingle beaches with numerous rock pools. Popular with families and the east beach (known as Finnygook beach) can be used by experienced surfers. Tides can be strong, so be careful
Low cliffs surrounding the small cove of Wembury beach. There are large areas of sand and many rockpools to explore at low tide.
Large sandy beach. All facilities nearby, including car parks, toilets, cafes and pub. Seaton Valley Countryside Park offers walks, picnic and amenity areas.
Stunningly beautiful three-mile stretch of fine sandy beach backed by slate cliffs, reached by paths at Freathy, Tregonhawke and Tregantle. Beware of strong rip tides.
A sheltered sand and shingle beach with rock pools. New facilities nearby are currently under development, including boat hire and watersports. Car park, toilets, cafe. Easy access.
Car parking either at small quayside park or 15 minute walk from the main car park in West Looe. Easy access. All year dog ban on East Looe beach. Dogs allowed on Plaidy.
A long rocky beach which stretches around Hannafore Point to the west of Looe.
There are several small beaches in Talland Bay – the main one by the Beach Cafe is probably the best for children and has sand both at high tide and low tide.
Attractive, sheltered sand and shingle beaches with all facilities nearby, including pubs, cafes and beach shops. Great to take the ferry across from the Barbican, or the Cremyll ferry to Mount Edgecombe and walk round.
At low tide the massive expanse of sand sweeps from the main beach up the estuary to the slip road, making it possible to walk along the sands.
A sheltered horse-shoe shaped cove with a fine sandy beach. There are excellent walks along the South Devon Coast Path with glorious scenery.
A beautiful and vast sandy beach backed by low cliffs at the mouth of the River Avon. A real ‘must’ because of the lovely Burgh Island. Enjoy a trip across to Burgh Island on the hugh tractor. The Venus Cafe does great take-away food.
Bantham is a vast sandy beach on the South Devon Coast Path. It is backed by marum-covered sand dunes, with many rock pools to explore.
Owned by the National Trust it is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The beach is made up of coarse sand and rocky outcrops, with rock pools to explore at low tide.
The 3 main beaches at Hope Cove are all small and sheltered by the coastline. Their shores are lapped by small waves, making them perfect for younger children.
Situated between two headlands, this beach provides fantastic coastal views and is completely submerged at high tide. There are miles of safe inland sailing along this stretch of coastline.
A fine sandy family beach which is accessible via the road, coastal footpath or a passenger ferry from Salcombe town centre.
The East Portlemouth side of the Salcome Estuary is lined by many beaches, and at low tide one can walk the entire fore-shore.
This amazing looking little bay is sheltered from the north by the cliffs of Pencannow and by the headland of Cambeak to the south.
Whether you wish to swim, sunbathe, surf, hunt for marine life in the hundreds of rock pools or just comb the beach for that personal memento, Widemouth offers all this and more.
A National Trust car park can lead you to this lovely beach but beware at low tide when swimming can be dangerous. Life’s a Beach is a great cafe there for you.
Trebarwith with its vast cliffs, dark caves and fine golden sand. Gull Rock is almost reminiscent of a dog’s head, keeping watch off shore. This is the sort of idyllic Cornish beach that features in many tourist brochures.
The closest beach to the town with level access from the Summerleaze car park, but also approached via the Downs or from the Canal at low tide.

An excellent weeks stay at Woodovis. Clean, warm, well stocked accommodation. Friendly, helpful staff. Plenty to do from the site both on the Moor and off. We’re not big swimmers but even we had a dip and Jacuzzi in the free, beautifully maintained pool. We shall return without a doubt.

Excellent site, the faculties were fantastic, everything you could think of. The indoor pool and spa was great, doggie wash, bike wash and plenty to do. Nice and peaceful at night. All the staff were very friendly and helpful, with a good shop. Close to the lovely town of Tavistock and National Trust places.
